IELTS Essay Band 6.5 (Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults. Discuss both views and give your own opinion)

Sense of competition and cooperation can be observed in children these days.  Some people believe that competition in children is a healthy practice, and it should be encouraged. However, in some people’s opinion children, who are more cooperative than competitive would be more successful in their adult lives. Both opinions have their own reasons, which will be discussed in this essay. I believe that competition is necessary in early life of a person, but in adult life being cooperative is more beneficial than being competitive.

Being competitive leads to development of a need to strive, and work harder to achieve children’s goals. Children are more creative in a competitive environment, and they try to perform better than their classmates to achieve a certain goal. For instance, quizzes and different competitions are arranged by schools to encourage the sense of competition in children.

However, being cooperative enhance the ability of a child to be able to work in a team. Children are more productive in a cooperative environment because more competition will result in a more selfish adult. For instance, in professional life companies usually hire individuals who have excellent team work skills. If a person is only competitive he or she will not be able to work in a group of people.

To conclude, having a sense of competition is beneficial but being cooperative is more beneficial in adult life. I believe that children should be competitive in early life as they are in their learning phase of life, but they should be taught to be cooperative too. Being cooperative will help them in their adult lives.
